This title has a lot of potential. The social commentary is very much relevant for comic books fans. More importantly, it’s spot on. Whether your poison is Twitter or Reddit, the characters you meet in Rogues’ Gallery #1 feel all too familiar.

Hannah Rose May and Justin Mason spend the entirety of the season-opening issue developing these characters, even though the series synopsis leads readers to think the focus will be on Maisie Wade, the bane of Red Rogue fans’ existence. But this is only going to add more weight to the events that take place in this “The Purge meets Scream … home invasion thriller.”

The only thing that was a little odd about Rogues’ Gallery #1 is the ending. It still propels readers into the next issue, but it’s a bit abrupt. There are plenty of instances where quick shifts work very well. This just felt like too large a leap — from a time-jump standpoint. It still fits the larger story, which is why it isn’t wasn’t a major detractor from the story.

As for the art, Mason and Triona Farrell make a versatile pairing. They bounce well from the tv show depicted in the story to “real life.” Mason does a great job differentiating the cosplay from the tv costumes, too — a very nice touch.

Promising start to a series that has a chance to have each issue outdo the previous.
