Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray Reteam for ‘On the Rocks,’ Apple & A24’s First Film

Jan 15, 2019

Sofia Coppola will direct Bill Murray again after their Oscar-winning 2003 film ‘Lost in Translation’ in the upcoming feature ‘On the Rocks.’ This project marks Apple and A24’s first film partnership.

Coppola won an original screenwriting Oscar for ‘Lost in Translation.’ She was also nominated for best director. Murray nabbed a best actor Oscar nomination, and the movie earned a best picture nomination. Needless to say, the potential for another hit is in the making.

Coppola also directed Murray since ‘Lost in Translation.’ The duo made the 2015 Netflix holiday special ‘A Very Murray Christmas.’ A24 previously worked with Coppola on ‘The Bling Ring.’

Rashida Jones also will star in the movie. The plot follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York. Production starts this spring in New York.

The movie marks the first project under the pact between indie studio A24 and Apple. The ‘Moonlight’ studio will be producing a slate of multiple films for the will-be streamer, as announced last November. Moreover, the deal marked the tech giant’s first substantial announcement regarding its feature film plans.

However, it is unclear how the films produced under the pact will be distributed. A24 handles theatrical distribution for its films.
