Sony Will Distribute ‘Booker’ from Director Gerard McMurray (‘The First Purge’) & Writer Derek Kolstad (‘John Wick’)

Mar 24, 2019

‘Booker’ is the newest pitch to cause a bidding war between several studios, with Sony being the victor once again. Amazon, Netflix, Universal and Lionsgate were all fighting for it with Sony. Sony’s Tri-Star recently triumphed by securing the rights to Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s ‘The Last Human.’

Meanwhile, ‘Booker’ is a ‘John Wick’-esque hard-boiled action film with an African American male lead.

McMurray’s recent film was ‘The First Purge,’ the fourth (and highest grossing) installment of the Blumhouse franchise. His feature film debut was Netflix’s ‘Burning Sands.’ Moreover, he was able to direct an episode of the upcoming ‘Twilight Zone’ reboot on CBS All Access, premiering April 1st. Next, he will be writing and directing Lionsgate’s ‘The Silver Bear,’ starring Michael B. Jordan. Perhaps Jordan will reunite with McMurray once again for this film?

Kolstad is prominent for writing both ‘John Wick’ and ‘John Wick: Chapter 2.’ He recently wrote the Hollywood remake of the 2010 South Korean film ‘The Man from Nowhere,’ for New Line. Additionally, he is developing Hulu’s ‘Hitman’ series and the film ‘Echo,’ both based on video games. Further, his scripts for ‘The Steward’ and ‘Nobody’ are in development. Next, he has Lionsgate’s ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,’ releasing May 17th.

There is no cast, filming, or release information as of now.
