The Wrap reports that the second Star Wars Anthology film coming out after Star Wars: Rogue One in 2018 will focus on the origins of our favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett. They also confirm that writer-producer Simon Kinberg is involved creatively, we’ve previously heard that Larry Kasdan was writing as well. The film is expected to be set before the events of Empire Strikes Back, since Fett dies in Return of The Jedi and it would be hard to bring him back for a film set during the events of Force Awakens.

This talk has been going on for ages and there was rumors that he’d show up in Rogue One to setup a new take on his origin. I’ve heard that the studio had been considering placing an Anthology version of Fett into Rogue One, in more than just a cameo. It’s possible we might not even know we’re watching him, or he just might be one of the many hired guns tasked to steal the Death Star plans.

In 2011, director Joe Johnston while promoting Captain America: The First Avenger had been suggesting he was going to pitch a solo Boba Fett film to George Lucas. This was of course before the massive deal with Disney to purchase Lucasfilm, and Kathleen Kennedy took over as the head of the studio. Then again, Joe helped create Boba Fett having strong roots with the franchise and a previous working relationship with producer Kathleen Kennedy. I’m sure they’ll try to consider other young directors for the job after Josh Trank’s exit, but I could see Johnston lobbying hard for the job. Let’s not for forget he did help launch Captain America for Marvel, he’s now a top-tier Marvel superhero.

During the merger with Disney the company killed a bunch of video games that were in development including 1313, which was a secret Boba Fett game and would throw you into the grimy world of bounty hunters and criminal scum of the Star Wars universe. It’s possible this material along with whatever Joe Johnston and Larry Kasdan have been cooking up could be combined into one awesome solo flick.
