Tron 3 Looks Set To Go With Garth Davis Directing and Jared Leto Starring

Aug 11, 2020

The Latest Update

After years of behind the scenes difficulties, Tron 3 is finally looking like it is happening. It has been three years since Jared Leto was first reported to be attached to the project. Now, as Deadline first reported, the project has found a director in Garth Davis and has a suitable script written by Jesse Wigutow. According to Deadline, the project is still in development and has not been green-lit yet despite these recent developments. However, Jared Leto’s posts on social media are very promising signs as Leto hypes up the film. Leto is clearly very passionate about the project and has been trying to push it forward for years. He now seems more passionate than ever as he promises “some very special ideas in store” for Tron 3.

The Director and Script

On the director, Garth Davis typically directs smaller budget, more artistic films like Mary Magdalene. Therefore, this a big step up for him and could be a major turning point in his career. It is worth noting that Joseph Kosinki, the director of the last Tron film, Tron: Legacy, is not returning. That 2010 science fiction film was a sequel to the original 1982 Tron film and focused on the son of the video-game developer, Kevin Flynn. Tron: Legacy turned in a profit making $400 million at the box office on a $170 million budget. However, the studio was obviously not thrilled by its box office performance given how they cancelled plans for a direct sequel.

While Disney exec Mitchell Leib did express his desire for Kosinki to return to the directing chair, it appears that Disney are moving in a different direction with Davis. As for the script, it is currently unclear whether Tron 3 will follow on from the previous film in any way or whether the studio is moving in a different direction with that as well.
