What was your first Cosplay experience?
My first con was Anime Evolution 2007, and it was my grade 12 grad year. I was far more excited to go to my first con than I was to go to my high school grad, and part of that was because I was afraid of being labeled as “geeky” in high school. I had decided that I was going to wait until I had graduated until “coming out” as a geek because at that point I wouldn’t have to answer to my peers anymore. I was free to let me geek out, so to speak… and boy did I let me geek out.

I was so taken by the con environment: the colours, the costumes, the people, the sounds… I had a full sensory overload and could not stop the rush of excitement that flowed through me all weekend. I ran around as Naruto for 3 days, so excited that it took a lot to calm me down long enough to sleep or eat! It was an experience that I really treasure and one that I hope every cosplayer gets to have at least once.

How long have you been Cosplaying?
I’ve been cosplaying for 8 years. Time flies!

Who or what inspired you to take up Cosplaying?
I was looking at Final Fantasy X AMVs (Anime Music Videos) on YouTube (a friend from LiveJournal linked them to me) and I saw a video of a Sakura and Ino suggested in the sidebar. I clicked it…curious because it didn’t look like a scene from the anime but it certainly did look like the characters. The video was of a Sakura and Ino cosplayer doing a synchronized dance at a con.

I was mesmerized and must have watched the video over and over about 20 times. Here were two amazing people in public wearing costumes surrounded by other people in public wearing costumes… how could this be!? Did people actually do this? Up until that point I thought that dressing up as anime/video game characters was something only I thought to do and something that I was doomed to keep a secret behind my bedroom door or in my backyard. I then followed a YouTube wormhole and saw every cosplay video I could. I wanted to know everything about cosplay, I wanted to meet other cosplayers and I wanted to go to a con ASAP! It all seemed so surreal.

If you had to pick a favorite Cosplay you have worn, or have seen someone else wear, what would it be?
It changes all the time, but I really like my Enzo Matrix cosplay from ReBoot. ReBoot was a childhood favorite of mine, so cosplaying from it really was (without hyperbole) a dream come true.

If you had unlimited funds and resources, what Cosplay would you create?
I’d probably shoot for a really elaborate CLAMP cosplay, perhaps something from Tsubasa (one of Syaoran’s outfits).

What advice would you offer to those who are aspiring Cosplayers?
This hobby is for you and only you, and you should cosplay any character you want in any way you want to. There is no wrong way to cosplay. 🙂
