Free guy movie expands cast
Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie now has Taika Waititi and Utkarsh Ambudkar onboard. However, their roles are currently unknown.
The 20th Century Fox movie will mark Levy’s return to film since ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ in 2014.
Waititi has appeared in all the projects he’s directed so far, with ‘Eagle vs Shark,’ ‘Boy,’ What We Do in the Shadows,’ ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople,’ ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ and both the upcoming Star Wars Disney+ series ‘The Mandalorian’ and his next film ‘Jojo Rabbit.’
Last year, Ambudkar was in the film ‘Blindspotting’ and the IFC series ‘Brockmire.’ Other projects include Jason Moore’s ‘Pitch Perfect,’ Tim Story’s ‘Ride Along 2,’ and the FOX/Hulu series ‘The Mindy Project.’ Next, he has Amazon’s ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ and Disney’s ‘Mulan,’ releasing March 27, 2020.

Moreover, Levy was going to helm the long-gestating ‘Uncharted’ feature film adaptation, but took on ‘Free Guy’ instead. Director Dan Trachtenberg (’10 Cloverfield Lane, ‘Black Mirror: Playtest’) will now tackle ‘Uncharted,’ starring Tom Holland.
Since ‘Secret of the Tomb,’ Levy has been directing television. He was part of two Netflix shows: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ Other films on his resume include the previous two ‘Night at the Museum’ films, ‘Date Night,’ and ‘Real Steel.’
‘Free Guy’ will be led by ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Detective Pikachu’ star Ryan Reynolds, as the titular character. The supporting cast, so far, includes Jodie Comer (‘Killing Eve’), Joe Keery (‘Stranger Things’), and Lil Rel Howery (‘Get Out’). The film was written by Matt Lieberman (‘The Christmas Chronicles,’ ‘The Addams Family (2019)’) and Zak Penn (‘Alphas,’ ‘Ready Player One’), and was originally a spec script in 2016.
This project will mark a reunion for Reynolds and Waititi, as they were both in the 2011 film ‘Green Lantern.’
Free guy movie premise
“An action-comedy about a bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers he is a background character in the open world video game ‘Free City.’ With the help of an avatar (Comer), he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.”
Filming could begin April 29th and wrap August 2nd, in Boston, Massachusetts. However, it seems Reynolds’ ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ is wrapping May 24th. Quebec, Canada could also be a shooting location.
‘Free Guy’ originally had a release date of July 3, 2020, but is now scheduled to hit theaters on August 13, 2021.
