It has been announced on social media that actors Anya Taylor-Joy (Illyana Rasputin), Maisie Williams (Rahne Sinclair), Henry Zaga (Roberto da Costa), Blu Hunt (Danielle Moonstar), Charlie Heaton (Sam Guthrie), and director Josh Boone of the ‘New Mutants’ film will be participating in a virtual panel at [email protected] on July 23rd, 2pm Pacific Time. Announced via Twitter and Instagram, the news comes with a short teaser for the movie including the announcement of this news at the end of the 50 second clip. The clip also features more of ‘Another Brick in the Wall,’ a song by Pink Floyd that has been the staple audio of much promotional material for the movie.
Trailers for ‘New Mutants’ were first released in 2017, though following this the film’s release was delayed. The film was recently announced for an April 3rd 2020 release but was unfortunately again delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions. After this the movie caused quite a stir when it was briefly listed on Amazon’s video on demand service for pre-order, then finally a new release date was set for August 8th. It is uncertain if this new date will be followed through on if lockdown restrictions dont ease up by the time of the scheduled release.
[email protected] is San Diego Comic Con’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. Since they’re no longer able to host their event physically they have shifted the event online, where they have announced over 350 panels will be occurring in the five-day span from July 22 to July 26. The panels are all going to be made available via their YouTube channel.
‘New Mutants’ is based on a Marvel Comics series by the same name. First published in 1982, the series served to fill a gap left in Marvel’s roster after the original X-Men grew up and a new group of teens needed to take their place. The series was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod. Though most promotional material for the ‘New Mutants’ movie has been quite secretive about the content, some images published in Cinefex indicate it involves the Demon Bear Saga, an iconic story in which Danielle Moonstar is plagued by nightmares of a demon bear threatening her and those she cares about.
‘New Mutants’ is produced by Twentieth Century Studios, and is the last of the 20th Century Fox X-Men films (sometimes dubbed the FoX-Men by fans) which started with the first ‘X-Men’ film in 2000. Though there have not yet been any plans announced to include the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it seems likely that this might be the next step in the popular franchise’s theatrical involvement.
