According to HN Entertainment, the Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie with Shawn Levy now has production designer Ethan Tobman and supervising art director Beat Frutiger onboard.
The 20th Century Fox movie will mark Levy’s return to film since ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ in 2014.
Tobman recently was part of Lionsgate’s ‘Kin’ and Amazon’s ‘Beautiful Boy.’ He also did an episode of the FOX series ‘The Exorcist.’ Next, he has another Amazon movie, Scott Z. Burns’ ‘The Report,’ starring Adam Driver, releasing this fall.

Frutiger was supervising art director on Cameron Crowe’s ‘Vanilla Sky’ and Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters.’ He is also no stranger to comic book films. He was art director on ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War.‘ He came back for the follow-up film ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ releasing April 26th. Also this year, he has Craig Brewer’s ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ starring Eddie Murphy.

Moreover, Levy was going to helm the long-gestating ‘Uncharted’ feature film adaptation, but took on Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie instead. Director Dan Trachtenberg (’10 Cloverfield Lane, ‘Black Mirror: Playtest’) will now tackle ‘Uncharted,’ starring Tom Holland.
Since ‘Secret of the Tomb,’ Levy has been directing television. He was part of two Netflix shows: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and ‘Stranger Things.’ Other films on his resume include the previous two ‘Night at the Museum’ films, ‘Date Night,’ and ‘Real Steel.’
Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie will be led by the ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Detective Pikachu’ star. The supporting cast, so far, includes Jodie Comer (‘Killing Eve’), Joe Keery (‘Stranger Things’), and Lil Rel Howery (‘Get Out’). The film was written by Matt Lieberman (‘The Christmas Chronicles,’ ‘The Addams Family (2019)’), and was originally a spec script in 2016.
Further, the premise is below:
“An action-comedy about a bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers he is a background character in the open world video game ‘Free City.’ With the help of an avatar (Comer), he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.”
Filming on the Ryan Reynolds Free Guy movie could begin April 29th and wrap August 2nd, in Boston, Massachusetts. However, it seems Reynolds’ ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ is wrapping on May 24th. in Quebec, Canada which could also be a shooting location.
‘Free Guy’ has a release date of July 3, 2020.
