Simon Kinberg Seemingly Confirms ‘Gambit’ Shooting Early Next Year – Says Script Is Great and It’s A Romantic Comedy

Despite some that have poured cold-water on our recent reporting that Gambit could begin filming on February 15th in New Orleans. There is now some official confirmation from producer Simon Kinberg while he was speaking with our pals over at IGN.

Kinberg says to IGN they indeed have a script (there were recent rewrites from Magic Mike screenwriter Reid Carolin with some help from his producing partner Channing Tatum) and that they are also looking to start shooting Gambit early next year (February anyone?).

“Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year.”

He also called Gambit a romantic comedy which might be a little odd to hear for those that might have been expecting a straight-up heist movie.

In an interview with IGN, Simon Kinberg, producer on Gambit and director-writer on Dark Phoenix, confirmed the movie will adopt a “romantic comedy” tone due to the nature of Gambit, himself.

“When you look at Gambit,” Kinberg said, “he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

Kinberg said the studio has taken a similar approach, allowing the film’s main character to dictate tone or genre, with Deadpool and Logan, both of which were big hits at the box office. “Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”

“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely,” Kinberg said, “It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

A director has yet to be announced by Fox, but it sounds like they already have some hired.

Fox had originally set the film’s release date for next summer, but it will most likely get a new release date.
