Free Guy Movie Release date: updated

Feb 23, 2019

updated free guy movie release date

Shawn Levy’s Free Guy movie release date was originally July 3, 2020, but the pandemic delayed in over a year to August 13, 2021. The 20th Century Fox movie will mark Levy’s return to film since ‘Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb’ in 2014.

Levy was going to helm the long-gestating ‘Uncharted’ feature film adaptation, but took on ‘Free Guy’ instead. Director Dan Trachtenberg who also directed 10 Cloverfield Lane and Black Mirror: Playtest will now tackle ‘Uncharted,’ starring Spider Man actor Tom Holland.

LEvy has been busy

Since ‘Secret of the Tomb,’ Levy has been directing television, primarily the Netflix shows ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ and the runaway successful series ‘Stranger Things.’ Other films on his resume include the previous two ‘Night at the Museum’ films, ‘Date Night,’ and ‘Real Steel.’

Free guy cast to date

‘Free Guy’ will be led by ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Detective Pikachu’ star Ryan Reynolds, as the titular character in a role that will feature him in a far more subdued character. The supporting cast, so far, includes Jodie Comer (‘Killing Eve’), Joe Keery (‘Stranger Things’), and Lil Rel Howery (‘Get Out’). The film was written by Matt Lieberman (‘The Christmas Chronicles,’ ‘The Addams Family (2019)’), and was originally a spec script in 2016 even though the movie release date was delayed .

the big idea

Moreover, the premise for the movie is below:

“An action-comedy about a bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers he is a background character in the open world video game ‘Free City.’ With the help of an avatar (Comer), he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.”

At the moment, Universal’s ‘Minions 2’ was slated to be the only other film that will release on July 3, 2020, but after the Free Guy movie release date was pushed to 2021, it might be a solo endeavor.
